I have been wondering lately whether this Substack needs a bit more direction than…well, the ramblings of whatever is currently on my mind. I was lucky enough to see some subscribers last night who kindly shared that they feel the randomness is enjoyable(!).

The blue lives!
It’s deep and dark, with the slightest bubble of a “flower” on its surface. It does not possess the loveliest smell. It has been sitting for months in the mudroom, quietly waiting to be remembered. We were convinced it was done offering its color.
Yet when my mom dipped the pH paper in it, the pH remained high. And when I gently folded a wet white rag into its depths, marveling at how beneath the dark surface its color is an unexpected, tea-like gold, manipulating it carefully before pulling it from the liquid, the fabric was the palest of blues.
I feel like I’m writing you a riddle.1 What has a bloom, but isn’t a flower? What can get exhausted, but isn’t an animal? What needs oxygen, but doesn’t breathe?
